A message from our Founder
Over the last decade, it has been a great pleasure to help Kindred grow into a thriving community of artists and makers. I believe creative collectives are essential to both the makers within them and to the wider communities and cities they support. This belief is supported by research: a recent study conducted within deprived communities in London found that, of those people who engaged with the arts, 82% enjoyed greater wellbeing (Creative Health: The Arts for Health Wellbeing report).
I think of the Kindred community as a creative coral reef which needs nourishing and protecting. For art practices to be relevant and to thrive, creative collectives need to give voice to many communities, each with their own approaches and aesthetic sensibilities.
The Kindred ecosystem has evolved to support individuals to develop collectively and thrive professionally. Our award-winning mentoring program for schools and colleges gives promising young people the help they need to get on the creative ladder. Giving back is an essential part of our mission and in my experience mentoring benefits both artists and students.
Our Open Studios are constantly growing in popularity - reaching ever wider audiences. In Spring 2023 we welcomed over 3000 visitors in one weekend. We continue to be in love with our campfire music and drumming circles where we can celebrate the cohesive nature of creativity whilst we bask in the warmth of each other.
The coming year will bring some challenges as we vacate our current space and look for a more permanent home. There are some promising options in the pipeline, and I look forward to sharing news soon.
With creative affection,
Angelique Schmitt
